Fourteen Wakings — hints

One nudge at a time. Nothing opens unless you click it, so you will not read the answer to a puzzle you have not reached.

Act I — First Waking

What am I supposed to do?

Fix what you were woken for, which is aft of the spine in engineering. It is not the bed the crew think it is; stand near it and listen. Then read what nobody aboard has read, and put one question on the beam, and go under.

The locker in the archive will not open.

It takes the wright's physical override, and that is in your effects drawer under bay one. take key in the cold bay.

Why bother with the manifest?

Because pages one and two are the prospectus that everybody knows by heart and pages three to sixty-one are annexes that nobody has ever read, and one of them is the same survey data with the error bars left on.

Which question should I send?

It is a nine-year round trip and you get one. send survey gets you the truth about the world. send why gets you the truth about the ship. send earth gets you the truth about home. All three are worth knowing and only one of them arrives.

How long should I sleep?

That is the game, and it is asking you properly. Sleep the whole gap in one cycle and it costs one waking. Sleep in short cycles and the bay opens again and again across the gap, and every one of those is a thaw off a body that has fourteen in it.

Act II — The Children

There is a rule on the wall with my name on it.

You said the first line, about a valve, while annoyed, in 2151. You did not say the other three. Read it anyway — line four is why you are awake.

Is there anything waiting for me?

Yes, in the archive, and it has been waiting nineteen years because a rule with your name on it says the wright's traffic is the wright's. read traffic.

Annexe 11 is just funding paperwork.

It is, until somebody tells you what to look for. If you asked Earth the right question in 2151, the answer tells you. If you did not, you will get another chance.

The gyroscope.

Swap it. Forty minutes. Then talk to the young engineer who wrote the procedure and was not allowed to run it, and to the chief of the watch who woke you anyway, and understand that she is not stupid — she is obeying you.

Act III — The Schism

Nothing is broken.

Correct. They woke you to settle an argument, which is the first time that has happened, and whether that is what line four means is itself the argument.

What is the argument?

The farm margin was eleven per cent when you said it should not go below eleven per cent. It is nine now. One half of the ship wants to plant fourteen per cent of the seed vault to get it back. The other half says the vault belongs to the far end. Talk to both. They are both right.

Compare the archives.

You are carrying the original core. The working archive has the prospectus in full and does not have Annexe 4 or Annexe 11 — not deleted, never copied across, in 2166, by somebody who read them and made a decision and has been dead for thirty years.

I do not want to choose.

rule nothing is available and it is the truest of the three, and it will land as a refusal, because from where they are standing it is one. That is not a trick. It is the actual cost of the actual honest answer.

Can I just go back to sleep?

No. Going under without saying anything is the one answer nobody will ever be able to quote, and the game will not let you do that to the woman who called the vote.

Act IV — The Silence

The shield is eroding twice as fast as the model says.

The model is not wrong. The model is answering a different question — it assumes cruise velocity and the ship is decelerating, which is the entire point of the burn. The shield is not being eaten, it is being spent. Re-trim the feed against measured flux.

Something is wrong with the archive.

Not wrong. Empty. Earth sent every ninety days from 2149 and stopped on the fourteenth of March 2191, and nobody woke you to say so because by 2205 it had been fourteen years and it was ordinary.

There is a message flagged for me.

There is, from the week before the silence, and four chiefs of the watch have looked at that flag and left it alone. Read it. It is the best thing in the game and it is not what you are expecting.

Can I see the world yet?

Yes, for the first time, from the bridge, on the ship's own instruments after eighty-nine years of taking Earth's word for it. Look at it before you decide anything.

Act V — Arrival

What do I do?

One thing, in the commons, to all of them at once. tell on its own lists what is available.

It will not let me tell them everything.

Because you do not have everything. There are five pieces and a partial version is worse than either of the other two answers, because it takes the story away and does not put anything in its place. The game tells you how many you are holding.

Which ending is right?

None of them. Everything is honest and costs them their founders. The world is useful and survives the first winter better and leaves a lie standing that you will sit with for eleven years in the front row. Nothing is cowardice and it is also the only one of the three that treats a hundred and thirteen years of other people's lives as theirs.

The bay did not open.

Then you spent the body, and you did it yourself, one short cycle at a time. That is not a bug and it is not a failure state — it is the number on the lid meaning what it said it meant since 2151.
