Undercroft — walkthrough
Each entry is one command, in order, separated by slashes.
Directions are abbreviated (n, se, u, d). This is
the exact sequence the game's own test suite runs, so it is always current.
Act I — Michaelmas
examine recess / u / examine doorway / e / talk to aldwin / ask aldwin about book ask aldwin about house / ask aldwin about year / e / read the register / e / ask osbert about plague ask osbert about apart / w / w / n / e / examine stalls w / s / s / examine bread / s / ask agnes about book n / n / w / d
Four things end this act — the book, the number, the recess and the year — and then you have to be standing in the undercroft. The rest is a house of fourteen people you already know the death toll of.
Act II — The Trench
examine recess / u / examine rubble / e / ask julia about west / out read the register / ask ken about gaps / in / w / d
The book is the act. Reading it in 1968 the first time is what puts your own words on folio 31.
Act III — Advent
u / e / e / warn them / ask osbert about apart / warn them to keep the sick apart ask aldwin for vellum / e / take tube / w / record the names on the vellum / w w / d / mortar the recess
warn them first — nothing else in the act unlocks until you have said the number out loud and been told what it is worth. Then the range, the vellum, the tube and the lime, in that order.
Act IV — Preservation by Record
take camera / ask julia about witness / e / ne / take bags / sw d / procedure / draw the recess / photograph the recess / sample the mortar / open the recess open the tube
The camera and the finds bags are collected before you go down the ladder, because the recess will not open until all four steps are done and two of them need something from above ground. procedure lists them at any time.
Act V — The Last Entry
u / e / e / ask aldwin about hand / ask aldwin about write / ask aldwin about letters copy the letters / copy the letters / copy the letters / write the last entry / w / w d / out / options / publish everything
Three sheets of practice before the pen goes anywhere near the page. The walkthrough publishes everything; publish the names, file the report and say nothing are the other three endings and the last command is the only one that differs.
