The Long Descent — walkthrough

Complete spoilers. Every puzzle, in order. If you only want a nudge, the hint page gives you one thing at a time.

Each entry is one command, in order, separated by slashes. Directions are abbreviated (n, se, u, d). This is the exact sequence the game's own test suite runs, so it is always current.

Act I — The Pit Head

w / talk to osgood / ask halvard about plant / e / n / take coolant
take impeller / take gasket / take line / take samples / s / e
in / s / read plate / n / close hatch / descend

Six units aboard: coolant (2), impeller (1), gasket set (1), copper line (1), sample case (1). The radiator core and the spare drill bit stay on the gantry.

Act II — The Salt

s / s / s / wear suit / out / use throat
use throat / use throat / n / e / take crystal / w
u / examine stake / d / s / in / n
n / n

Clear the throat three times and the crystal comes off the stake. Nothing is jettisoned in this act — the choosing starts next act, and the machine is still whole here.

Act III — The Fossil Sea

s / fit line / s / vent coolant / vent samples / vent gasket
s / wear suit / out / examine tide line / n / take jaw
s / e / e / read log / strip bank / w
w / in / n / n / n / cross

Four units over the side. What you jettison here you never see again, and the ending remembers it.

Act IV — The Machine Graveyard

s / s / strip winch / n / fit winch impeller / s
s / wear suit / out / n / read log / take theodolite
s / ne / examine holes / read log / sw / e
read log / strip pump / take plate / w / se / read log
nw / s / read line / n / in / n
n / n

strip winch first — the pump is dead and the hoist is the only impeller aboard. The 1944 machine has a better one, but only if you live long enough to reach it.

Act V — The Chamber

s / s / s / wear suit / out / n
take thermocouple / s / e / read marks / e / examine interval
take source / w / w / in / n / e
put logs in capsule

The last command is the choice: the logs, the source, or yourself. Three endings.
